Brian Regan, the Traditionalist Comedian

All the good comedians are liberal. For the best comedian of our time, in my humble opinion, is what I would call, not a liberal nor a conservative, but a traditionalist: Brian Regan. Regan was born in as one of eight children in a Catholic of course family. Stephen Colbert comes to mind, the last of eleven kids, about which he boasts constantly on his The Late Show.

In your “Stupid in School” bit, you dip into the “Brian Regan voice” Then I started seeing that in reviews — not as a negative, but just as an I was wondering, Does anybody here realize I’m the guy who makes fun of these?

But with multiple Netflix specials, collaborations with Jerry Seinfeld and David Letterman and an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, Regan might be the only one who thinks so. Regan released his first comedy CD in and now has seven hour-long specials. Before the night of clean humor, we caught up with Regan to discuss the history of comedy, controversial jokes and his upcoming performance. The Spectrum : In , you did the first ever live stand-up set on Comedy Central.

What was it like to be involved in that experience for the network and as someone who has been doing comedy for over 20 years? Regan: We were the ones that pitched the idea to them. And I had done stand-up specials before, but I wanted to do something different and challenging. And it was —— maybe scary is overstating it —— but it was definitely concerning. There could be technical problems, there could be somebody in the audience who decides to be a jerk. We had to have a lot of contingency plans.

So anyway, it was a fun experience. Do you see a similar trend in comedy? And do you see yourself in that role as one of the curators of comedy? R: Well, I have always guarded against a few things.
